comment Can you tell what types of card slots are in a PC without opening up the case and physically eyeballing it?
Is this a "friends and family" situation or a "Enterprise" situation? If it's friends and family, you better look at it your self to be sure. In a business setting, I would think you'd be familar with the types of PC's usually deployed. If you really have that much of a range in models, "msinfo32" can tell you some good info.

comment How to stop mouse “pausing”
You didn't even mention firefox in your question. I'm assuming it acts crappy besides just in the browser? Buy another MS mouse. For a software company, they make some damn fine hardware

comment GUI to tunnel VNC over SSH
+1. Putty won't launch VNC for you, but will get you most of the way there. Get a copy of portable putty, and then create profiles for each SSH endpoint. Configure the SSH tunnel for each. Instruct your user to simply connect with a profile and then direct your vnc viewer to localhost

comment Why is Firefox (Vista) using 400MB RAM? Because of plugins/addons?
How many tabs/uptime? That really isn't that bad. Chrome takes an average of 125MB for every tab process here, 250MB each for GMail and FB

comment Auto extracting software for Linux?
+1 Better way would be to use the inotify command line interfaces inotify-tools.sourceforge.net/#info You could change the script to just run when the folder contents is modified. I think this would be the best way to go about this problem

comment Building Unix/Linux programming environment for a Windows developer
Why do you prefer Linux as the host? I prefer running *NIX VM's on windows to get better seamless window support.

Buy a fast SSD then. My 900A screams. It feels like my C2Q, faster boot times even.

comment How to launch VMWare Server?
Yes, you can still use the VI client. Better yet, disable the tomcat service and save yourself all that RAM it's eating.

The choice of CD-R vs DVD-R media makes no difference in this case

comment Why is 'sudo' often omitted in installation instructions?
A lot of build instructions are very generic, they can build on many different platforms, some of which don't even have sudo. Sudo also isn't really a command related to the build, just a security measure.
