comment Looking for a good simple free/open source photo editor?
Irfanview is great choice for a simple and easy-to-use photo editor. It's editing capabilities aren't as powerful as others, nor are they intended to be, since it's primarily a photo viewer that has grown a few editing abilities as time has gone by.

The Gimp is open source but definitely not simple.

The CRT/LCD advice is spot on. I sort of assume everybody is working with an LCD these days, but some aren't, and the flicker from CRT displays can cause eyestrain and headaches even if it doesn't appear to the user to be flickering. LCD technology is different, pixels are constantly backlit rather than phosphors that get refreshed many times per second, much better for the eyes.

comment What's the used software in this animation?
No, things don't necessarily work that way. On the other hand, some effects that are "canned" and made easily producible by some certain piece of software are easily recognizable and give you a clue that often indicates the software that was used to produce the effect. E.g., with Camtasia the particular way it can be set to produce a graphic circle in spots where a mouse button is being clicked make it clear to someone who's aware of it that Camtasia was probably used to produce the video.

comment Lost left/right cursor keys in VIM insert mode?
@depesz: enabling 'filetype plugin' basically means special functionality may be loaded in buffers for files that have a filename extension that's linked to an available "plugin". The special plugin kay mappings would be loaded only when editing a file of that type, i.e., with that extension in the filename. Disabling all plugins (i.e., what you did) would fix the "problem", or you could also likely avoid the problem by renaming the problematic files to have a different extension. (Or you could uninstall just the SQLComplete plugin, assuming that's the one that's causing the problem.)

comment Application to open / edit a very large CSV file (500 MB, 4 million records)?
@Giorgi: There must be something extra-unusual about your file. On my wimpy netbook gVim (with no swap file and disabled undo) opens a 750MB test file in about 10 seconds, and jumps from the beginning to the end of 10 million line file are instantaneous.

@Giorgi: "the only one" out of which? People might be curious to hear the other editors you tried that didn't work.
