comment How is PNG lossless given that it has a compression parameter?
Typically you get diminishing returns (i.e., not as much decrease in size compared to the increase in time it takes) when going up to the highest compression levels, but it's up to you. Actually, it is up to the circumstances. If you’re saving a file here or there, you may as well use the maximum compression since it’s irrelevant if it takes an extra few seconds. However, if you’re constantly doing 1,000’s (e.g., in a web-server), then that is where compression level matters. It’s not so much a question of when to use more (that’s clearly what’s desired), but rather, when to use less.

comment Why is checking Windows Update so slow?
Most files have multiple patches available, but they don’t all come out in a nice, orderly one-at-a-time fashion; they essentially come out randomly. It is difficult enough to apply different patches to a text file (look at the complexity of versioning systems), but with a binary file it is so much worse. If you check a file and it seems to not have patch A1-q44.3pr1S_7 (flat numbers won’t suffice), should you apply it? Does it already have a more recent patch? How does this patch interact/interfere with others? Version patching is mindbogglingly confounding in thought, let alone code.

comment How can I enable Silverlight in Google Chrome 42+?
But are you really surprised that Google lied and did whatever the hell it wants regardless of user feedback? If not, then you clearly don’t have much experience with Google (lucky you).

Too bad you can't selectively block (click-to-play) HTML5 elements, so welcome to the age of wasted bandwidth, memory, CPU cycles, and the land of no peace and quiet with more and more damned big, long, loud autoplaying HD videos everywhere (especially ads) and no way to prevent it.

comment Increase maximal thumbnail size in Windows Explorer
The largest thumbnails supported in Windows Explorer are 256x256 pixels. How? Where? Why? It is hard-coded somewhere in explorer.exe? Maybe there's a way to hack it bigger. I really don't see why there should be any technical reason for it to not be possible to be bigger, the re-sizing algorithm should work just fine for bigger thumbnails, it's just a matter of hacking Explorer. Damn, now I have yet another project to add to my list. ಠ_ಠ

comment How can I disable HTML5 content in popular browsers like Firefox and Chrome?
“HTML5” is a buzzword. Please specify what you want to disable. It’s pretty clear (if you actually bothered to read the question, especially the second and last lines) what he wanted/wants to disable: HTML5 video and audio elements.

comment How can I search for all files that have their archive bit set in Windows 7?
Wow, you just gotta love how “user-friendly” the new (at that time) Windows Explorer search function is. Learning about bit-fields and doing bitwise math is so much easier for novice users than simply checking check-boxes or using text strings. ◔_◔ (Also, this makes it very difficult to search for a single attribute regardless of others. For example, to search for hidden objects, you have to search for H, H+A, H+R, H+S, H+R+A, H+R+S, H+R+A+S, let alone …+I…, …+E…, etc. So many permutations.)

comment How do I connect a 5 1/4" floppy drive to a modern PC?
I guess the reason that there are no formal, official, branded USB 5.25" floppy drives is because there is not enough demand to justify the manufacturing costs. Even official USB 3.5" drives will get phased out as demand peters off. Seems like a good time to get an electronics kit (breadboard, PSU, wires, etc.) and an Rπ/Arduino to “roll your own”.

you can always reset wuauserv with the following BAT script For the record, it's either (.)BAT file or batch script (or batch file), not BAT script which sounds more like a script for The Bat!.

comment What is the lastest working version of VMWare Player on Windows 7 32 bits?
(I’m upgrading VM Player 4 to 6; hopefully the horrible “jealous child” bug has been fixed since VMP4.)
