Sadly, I’ve become soured by the SE network. It started great, but went downhill. Some mods are too aggressive/bias, policies are arbitrarily/capriciously/selectively applied, and some users treat the sites as MMOGs, “rep-whoring”, copying others’ work, and posting random guesses to game the system by abusing and exploiting auto-bounty assignment.

I care(d) about the integrity of the site, so I feel anywhere that allows such disreputable behavior isn’t somewhere worth staying. My OCD not withstanding, I won’t be contributing much here anymore and will find somewhere else to help people. I apologize to all of the people I would have helped here in the future.

Images
As a visual-learner, I often add images to my posts to make them more effective. Sometimes I take photos, sometimes I create them with software, sometimes I find them through Google Images or WikiPedia.

Mod
I’ve been asked hey bro, y u no b mod? get u POWR! impr0ve site. I had considered it and was even tempted to run a few times, but I just have too much to do already, so I can’t take on that kind of commitment when I know I won’t be able to do as good a job as I’d demand. Besides, as the behavior of the other mods became more and more apparent, I realized that it would be pointless.

comment How can I stop Bing Bar from showing up in Windows Update
I don’t have those keys in the registry at all (no MSN key), yet I keep getting the Bing “updates”. Obviously it is unable to read the version number at all, so I don’t think that providing a corrupt one is going to work either.

This is very constructive; just convert it to community-wiki.

it is simple web server that's unzip, run and there you go @WernerCD, yes if by simple you easy-to-use, but certainly not simple as in basic (which is specifically what this question is about).

comment Horrible OpenGL performance on Intel HD Graphics laptop
@Raystafarian, when I wrote the question, there were separate tags for HD3000, HD4000, etc., so I made one for HD(1). It looks like the others have vanished. This particular question applies to at least Intel HD graphics (what I experienced it with), but seems to be limited (someone said it doesn’t happen with newer ones), so I can’t be more narrow.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it were some Google product that is causing all the trouble; their heavy-handed fascist methods are exactly the kind of thing that fouls things up.

comment How do I kill an unattended scheduled task?
@DanielRHicks, yes, if so defined, but the default setting is to have it run only when the user logs in. Regardless, the question is dead, so I don’t expect any new information.

@Torres, that is the GUID associated with his NIC. You’ll need to replace it with the GUID associated with your own NIC.

@chelsealover, sounds like a defective earphone, or possibly a defective laptop, but most likely a short-circuit in the earphone.

comment Batch rename files to numbers with leading zeros
Yes, exactly. This question is about automatically padding the numbers as necessary in the filenames with leading zeros. The answers you referenced do not do that, neither do your sample scripts. You missed the point to the question entirely.

comment How do I find version numbers for Google Chrome offline installers?
@sammyg, that’s a shame. Google is certainly baffling. On the one hand, they retain every version of everything for eternity (e.g., Google Maps now allows you to look at previous satellite photos, not just the latest ones), but on the other hand, they force users to update to the latest version of everything whether we like it or not (usually not). Yet another reason to stop using all Google products and services. In the meantime, you could try using Chromium; the last I checked, Google still kept every version of that on their buildbot back to the very first one.

comment How to open Google Chrome with extensions disabled / turned off?
@studgeek, then you are missing something or modifying it while Chrome is still running (it reverts the setting when you exit) because this is how Chrome determines which extensions are enabled or disabled, and if didn’t work, then you would have to re-enable/disable everything each time you run it (when running normally), but clearly you don’t; it remembers which are enabled or disabled. Also, make sure you are taking extra care with things like commas because a missing or extra one will render the JSON syntax invalid which causes Chrome to ignore the file.

I'm not sure if the three bullet points you provided are steps or just different things to try that individually might fix the issue Yes, they are keyboard-only and mouse-only ways to accomplish it.

comment How can I stop Bing Bar from showing up in Windows Update
@Zarepheth, can you confirm that it never returns, or just until the next update? Of course, if it does, it does so by simply corrupting the version number so that it cannot compare to check if there is an update, so note that they can easily make it so that it always offers Bing if the existing version number is invalid.
