comment HDD activity causes lag
Check your memory usage in Task Manager. If >75% is in use you may be running out of usable memory for the system. In that case, it uses the HDD for system memory, which is slower and slows everything down.

comment CPU fan speeds up in fullscreen mode
The effect on fan speed may be worse if the CPU heat sink is dirty of heat sink compound is getting old. You might use a temp. monitor like hwmonitor_1.26 to confirm a big increase in temperature.

comment Cloning Windows 7: What happens to previous machine?
Was Windows on your system originally OEM-installed (came with it), OEM-purchased (OEM version purchased from a dealer) or Retail version (Retail version purchased from a dealer)? Might make a technical difference how to handle it, but ultimately any Windows license is for only one system.

comment Sony Bravia LCD TV doesn't recognize external HDD partitions
See What's the file format Sony uses for recording from Bravia onto USB drives?. It seems you can't, at least not legitimately. It seems that encryption and file size limitations are the key problem. I imagine this is necessary due to program copyright limitations and piracy-prevention. So basically an HDD has to be dedicated to the TV, and only good for record and playback on that TV. It is the same as if you had a cable tv dvr.

Did you try to reset the .pdf file extension/application association? Possibly it was modified by another application.

comment Viewing HTML5 video in Firefox on Windows 7 without WMP
How about checking with Page Inspector (Ctrl+Shift+C)? You should be able to confirm the video is html5 (though I suppose the contextual menu says the same) and whether the html5 player is loading.

As I mentioned, do you have another media player installed? Also, if you right click in the video frame, do you get the html5 contextual menu (at least saying Firefox understands what it is)? My guess is that some codec installed into the OS by WMP is missing.

What do you see on the video frame? Black screen or something else? Also, do you have Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPC-HC) or another player installed? I have used Combined Community Codec Pack for years without problem. It includes MPC-HC and is free.

What version of Firefox? And do you have the plug-in "Open H264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems, Inc. 1.3" active? If I recall it has been part of the standard installation for the last few months.

comment Firefox and Flash: constant crashes ALL THE TIME. Seeking stability\solution
Is there some reason you have to use Flash as opposed to html5 or other players out there? I would look for another solution if you can. Personally, I usually have the Flash Player plugin disabled, and not much is broken (other than ads and push video I can do without).

But originally the system speed was better, right? Or not?

comment System very slow, benchmarks and tests give different results
Since you say "recently", are you saying originally it was OK? If so, I would not go after the benchmarks. Have you checked to see if any processes or resources are running unexpectedly, or are causing high CPU usage? Also you can check if the memory in use is approaching the physical amount (had this problem on a Vista laptop).
