comment Decrypting and reading a FileVault sparsebundle in Linux?
AFAIK DMGExtractor is a windows program -- though it might work in Linux under the wine windows emulator (the question was if a sparsebundle could be decrypted and read with Linux).

comment Change hostname in Windows 7
I think that your true hostname is is in the eyes of the beholder, so to speak. If I need to type "ssh foobar" to connect to your host, I think your hostname is foobar, even if on your host it says it's hostname is barfoo. Your network administrator may name your host differently from how you name it. What you name your own host can be considered the name that you would like everyone else to use to refer to your host. But in reality, your host may end up being referred to with a different name. So what your hostname is depends on who's asking.

comment tar-ing / should I use -C / . or just /
I don't see that using execve precludes you from using shell commands. Couldn't execve call /bin/sh with option -c followed by a command line that includes pipes, globs, or whatever else might be needed to create the tar file the way you want?

comment How to fix USB mouse freeze in Ubuntu 10.04 or Fedora 13?
If the mouse really works OK when booted from the Ubuntu live CD, then it sure sounds like a bad installation. Perhaps you could try installing the OS again.
