I do IT support for an animal shelter (the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, in Upstate New York). I'm a vegan, because I think that our compassion should be extended to all sentient creatures, not just domestic pets. I helped rescue stranded pets in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. You can see photos of my experience at www.katrina-animal-rescue.com.

comment Low-cost video streaming distribution system
Thanks, Eric. The free version of Justin.tv includes advertisements. I would prefer to have a "clean" video stream embedded in our site. The premium (ad-free) plans are actually fairly expensive: justin.tv/payments/premium . Still, if I can't find a solution to implement myself, I may have to use the ad-based option.

Thanks, AutoIt looks promising. I was hoping that there would be some easier way to achieve my goal, but it looks like I may have to learn AutoIt. It may come in handy for other uses, though.

@billc.cn: Thanks, but can you provide a little more guidance? Are you referring to a scripting language? In the end, I need some simple way for this to be implemented on workstations, where the end-users can just double-click on an icon to launch the time-limited application. Thanks.

Thanks for the tips. You wrote, "Your best bet is to try and see". The problem is that I have no independent way of verifying the accuracy of the results, save by comparing them to some theoretical values from the literature. I think what will do is install a real-time version of Linux on a spare machine that I have handy, and then try to write the program in some language that is available in Linux. Perhaps I'll also write the same program in Windows (my preferred environment) and see if the results are comparable.

The program I have in mind will have some special characteristics that are unique to the problem that is being investigated. It's unlikely that an off-the-shelf program will suit my needs.
