comment Configure ack on a per-directory basis
That makes sense. The --ignore-dir still takes time for ack to go through the file system and examine each directory to see if it should be excluded. Passing in only the directories you want to search eliminates that scanning.

comment Why doesn't --type-set work in ack?
What I have found in the past is that people have not the ack=ack-grep alias, but more often ack='ack -a' aiias.

comment Why doesn't --type-set work in ack?
This may be better handled over on the ack-users mailing list. Also, while you're at it, upgrade to ack 2.04.

Are you sure about the no -a? Try running ack -f, and then try ack -f --noenv and see if the results are different.

comment Open all files in a VIM split window view with grep/ack command
Please note that if you're using ack -a to get a list of files, you should probably just be using grep. In fact, ack 2.0 does away with the -a flag.

Why do you think that ack "should be" faster than grep?

comment How to output a partial or a number from a mataching in grep or ack
ack and grep behave differently. For one, ack won't look in binary files unless you very specifically ask it to, so maybe the errors you were getting were warnings about searching binary data.

comment How to output a partial or a number from a mataching in grep or ack
@BillyChan: You mean ack-grep and ack, not act-grep and act. And how do you mean that ack is more stable than grep? I'm the author of ack and I certainly wouldn't make such a claim.

The best answer is that you should not be editing your deployed files manually in the web server's directory.

You may want to investigate Strawberry Perl, which includes a full GCC toolchain and nmake and all those treats. strawberryperl.com

comment Why doesn't ack recursively search all files by default?
In general, you don't specify files on the command line with ack, which is what you're doing with ack foo *. When you specify files, then you're telling ack to not do any of its magic file selecting, which includes recursing into lower directories.

comment How to set line length limit when using grep (Filter result by line length)?
Also, ack will ignore minified Javascript files. It sees them as not being source code, and so ignores.

It oughta be. I have a Google Alert for ack. Other authors can do the same.

Also, hitting / and Enter will repeat the previous search. Hitting ? and Enter will repeat the previous search backwards.

comment Can I simulate ack by using grep with the right combination of options?
It certainly is, but it's a battle I've stopped getting into. If people want to do it the old way because That's How Ken And Dennis Say It Should Be, then that's up to them.

Michael is saying that the timings above are not taking into account disk cache. (and a -0.29 to Dennis for being more interested in smacking down Michael than de-obtusing the reply)
