comment msconfig “access denied” - need to be an administrator, when I am
If I change a service to run as my personal administrator account and reboot, the same error occurs when deselecting that service in msconfig.

comment msconfig “access denied” - need to be an administrator, when I am
See above, services are either logged on using Local System or Network Service. If I tick the box to "allow service to interact with desktop" it makes no difference.

comment msconfig “access denied” - need to be an administrator, when I am
If I run either cmd or msconfig with my administrator account, I receive an error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

comment Will the E-Port Plus laptop docking station allow me to use three viewports/monitors *without* USB?
To clarify: when you connect two monitors to it, do you wish to close the laptop lid so you're not viewing the laptop screen? Do you want to use 2 monitors plus the viewport for a total of 3 screens at the same time?

Thanks. It was resolved yesterday.

I now just need to work out how to set up network profiles, so I don't have to manually set TCP/IP settings each time I replace the LAN cable with the direct ethernet cable connecting to the netbook.

@ppumkin: the guide to cross over cabling has no mention of what gateway and DNS entries to use, unfortunately, but using the PC's own IP as gateway and DNS server works. Thanks for your help.

@ppumkin: thanks; I never knew there was a bridge USB-USB cable.

comment USB > USB (PC > PC) direct connection Windows XP
The special reason is I simply don't have an ethernet cross over cable, and a straight ethernet cable hasn't worked, although I may have set TCP/IP settings incorrectly for that. I can't ping either PC from the other over wireless; see this thread: superuser.com/questions/271343/…

I tried a normal ethernet cable, and switched TCP/IP to automatic settings for both PCs. Their IP addresses became 169.254.54.201 & 169.254.155.14, with 255.255.0.0 subnet mask, but they couldn't ping each other. Does it matter what IP address and subnet mask they have?

Cantankerous much? I guess if I ever want software to manage my printer, I had better not "invent" the term printer manager. :-P

comment Replace Windows XP wireless manager
Thanks. The Intel® PROSet/Wireless Basic Enterprise Software for Windows XP 32-Bit was what I needed. This software gave a warning: "hardware radio switch: off". There is no physical switch for wireless on the laptop, but there was a blue function key for wireless, on the same key as F4. Fn+F4 turned wireless back on.

wireless client software / wireless manager. I can find drivers for the wireless card on intel.com, but not any wireless client manager...

comment Stop Microsoft Excel 2007 from formatting anything?
@GabiDiaconescu: I believe so, but I'm not sure as I don't have Excel on this PC. It's only function is to leave entries unformated. I don't see why there should be exceptions to the type of entry this applies to.

Hi Rob. What edits do you need to do? Have you tried Notepad? Or Notepad++?

comment Rename drive letter of the system partition on Microsoft Small Business Server 2003
But there is only 1 partition in the entire computer, and it is currently F. From your logic, Windows should be calling it C, not F.

comment Rename drive letter of the system partition on Microsoft Small Business Server 2003
Only one disk has been formatted, with one partition on this disk. The OS was installed on this partition, and presumably it is the boot partition?
