@ala: If you want to show hidden files, you'll need to use something like David Remy's answer only with the appropriate flags passed to the dir command.

Just having lots of ports isn't enough -- the controller has to be fast enough to handle delivering the data to the workstation.

@theB3RV: IIRC, Explorer defaults to Active Mode FTP. I can't think of any other FTP-specific options for Explorer off the top of my head.

@djechelon: Pipelining helps, but you still have the problem of command overhead and most pipeline implementations limit the number of active simultaneous requests (because overhead can still swamp the payload eventually).
