comment Installing IE 8 on windows xp hangs forever
Run the IE setup with the /update-no command line option to keep it from looking for updates. Then do Windows Update later.

comment What are the best options to use when compressing files using 7 Zip?
@endolith: bzip2, lzma, wv, and ppmd are all very recent additions to the file format. It's not even safe to assume that your recipient can handle deflate64, much less anything newer.

comment Can SSD raid be faster than ramdisk?
Any competent DBMS will keep as much of the DB in RAM as possible. If your DB is tiny enough to fit in a RAMdisk, it's tiny enough to just fit in RAM. Properly tuning your DBMS with an SSD will give you the performance you're looking for -- for local development, you can even take advantage of things like write back caching and worrying less about ACID. A RAMdisk is fighting the system.

@KorayTugay: Generally speaking, the answer to "Do I need a RAMDisk?" is almost always "No. If you really needed it, you'd know enough that you wouldn't have to ask." What are you doing that makes you think you'll need it?

AnandTech's Smasung 840 EVO Review shows how most current controllers hold up under sustained writes, and his Corsair Force LS Review shows how garbage collection starts working over the course of an HD Tach run. Tom's Hardware Link shows how the Marvell controller in the m4/M5S and the Samsung 830(!) maintain performance.
