SuperUser would be a better fit for your question - but DO NOT repost it yet. This question will either be migrated or closed here - in the latters case you can re-ask it on SuperUser.

comment How do I set the hostname of a Windows machine?
If you are connected to a wireless router or devices that hands out IP addresses some do tend to set a domain or hostname as .local - go into the router settings (if you have access to it) and see if there are any options to change the domain.

+1 for Clonezilla. Takes a bit of getting used to but is free, decent software. Only downside is that it can't seem to resize images to a smaller disk size that was imaged from.

@Moab, I realise it was but as I found it through the "vote to close" dialogue and I read the question and answers for a couple of minutes before actually posting the comment.

There's a very good answer to the similar question here.

As this question is off-topic on ServerFault it's off-topic here. All we can say it "it depends".

comment Long distance wifi for media cloud
Skipping over the potential legal and security issues for a moment, you would have an unsecured wireless hotspot (or something like a Captive Portal that requires a login, with the username and password on the login page) with your media computer connected to it. You could connect your home computer on it but you would have to used a different subnet (or, if you really wanted to, buy a switch that supports VLANs).

I don't understand by what you mean by "long distance wifi"? DO you mean a long distance wireless network, or accessible over the interent? Pulling any sort of video over consumer wireless I would highly advise against but YMMV.

comment what are these “online installers” for?
Whatever their purpose, they intensely annoy me. When I click on "download" I want the program, not a program that downloads the program for me. Adobe Flash, I'm looking at you.

@Ramhound, don't you think RMA'ing the motherboard is a little excessive, considering that the OP hasn't even attempted replacing the battery.

If you can't help yourself re-installing IE then I'm going to say you've probably got bigger problems. As harsh as it may say...go outside for a bit? Sometimes, a technical answer is not the best answer.

comment Windows 8 installation from USB flash drive
This question is better suited to SuperUser. Hold on and it will be moved shortly, no need to repost. I seem to recall, however, if you unplug the USB and re-insert it into a different USB port setup installs the right driver and can continue. Hopefully SuperUser can confirm, though.

comment Change NetGear SSID
Does the router have a section where it says "domain" or "internal network name"? If so, it'll probably be set as "internal" or something similar. See if you can find that and change that to the SSID.
