comment How to create PDFs with a left pane that has table of contents?
florian-diesch.de/software/pdfrecycle is a PDFlatex frontend that makes it quite easy to add bookmarks to a PDF

comment How can I upgrade my ubuntu system from the command line?
apt-get dist-upgrade doesn't upgrade to a new release, it does the same as apt-get update but may also install new packages or remove packages to satisfy dependencies.

have a look at the "Out" and "Label" keys in /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf to change the file name ans path. To automatically open the file I'd use an own folder instead of /tmp/ and watch it for new files using incron.

comment Upstart Help: Change Ubuntu 10.04 Service Boot Order
Events can be emitted in .conf files using the "emits" statement (like the "filesystem" event in mountall.conf) or by external programs using DBus (net-device-up is AFAIK emitted by upstart-udev-bridge; you can use initctl to emit events from the command line).

comment How can I use matlab's command window from inside emacs?
Sorry, it should be C-x, not M-x. As I don't have neither a Mac nor Matlab I can't check if using DOS line ends really causes this problems but it's something to try. On matlab-emacs.sourceforge.net/faq.shtml there's a Matlab script to download the Matlab mode without using CVS if you want to try it.

comment How can I register a custom protocol with xdg?
If opening a file:// URI Ubuntu doesn't call xdg-mime at all but uses run-mailcap if not running under a supported DE, Fedora 13 first tries to find the default app using xdg-mime and if that doesn't work falls back to mimeopen. xdg-mime uses the Shared MIME Info database freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/shared-mime-info

No, you can only trace one process (and its children, using -f)

comment Create keyboard shortcuts to move/resize windows in Ubuntu
I don't know how to get the size of the monitor a window is on if your screen is stretched on multiple monitors and I don't have a second monitor around to try a bit. Maybe one could use xrandr to get the resolutions and then use the screen position to find out which monitor it is. Getting this right with all the options for turning, reflecting, scaling, ... and all possible relative monitor positions may get a bit tricky. Maybe it's worth a question of its own...

comment Create keyboard shortcuts to move/resize windows in Ubuntu
"xwininfo -root" prints some information about the root window. awk takes its output, selects the lines containing either " Width:" or " Height:" and prints the values. Usally "awk '/ (Width|Height):/ { print $2 }'" works here, too, I just needed the longer one to work around a bug some time ago and got used to it. The two values are then used as arguments to "set --" which sets $1 and $2 to that values. For better readability I want to use $width and $height instead so I set them accordingly. In the wmctrl call this variables are then used to calculate the new window width and height.

comment How to find which programs are using up swap space
The value includes memory that is shared between different processes. You can use memstat -p PID to see the shared libs used by the process with the given PID along with their memory usage (total, not onyl swapped out).

comment How do I log out of gdm from the command line?
This doesn't work as recent versions of Ubuntu use upstart instead of a SysV init script to start gdm. Use "sudo service gdm stop" instead. Like Control + Alt + Backspace this kills the X server (together with gdm). To just logout the current user Thomas Leonard's solution is usually better.

That's about the same as why I prefer to link this page: It gets updated for newer versions of Ubuntu so you know where to look if you upgrade to a newer version, and the page has all the information you need while I may forget something that's obvious to me (but maybe not to you) when paraphrasing or copying the text.
