comment What keeps you from changing your public IP address and wreaking havok?
Many years ago when I worked at an ISP, a (now ex-) staff member set his dialup settings to use the IP of the nationwide DNS server of the ISP. Back then, the routes were allowed and as such the entire customer base started sending all DNS requests to this one dialup user. Sure enough, no one has internet while we worked out wtf happened. The routers now whitelist the IPs per customer.

comment 2 accounts in safe mode ?
FWIW, you can re-enable the Administrator account and have it appear on your login screen by: Start -> Run -> lusrmgr.msc -> OK; Users -> Administrator -> Un-tick "Account is disabled" -> OK. The same application will show you the other "hidden" accounts running on your PC.

While this didn't fix my problem, it is a good answer. It's been long enough without any other responses so you win :)

comment How can I “turn on wireless capability” in Windows 7?
I do have a software switch for wifi - but it involves pressing Fn-F5, which brings up a Lenovo software dialog with options that need to be moused to & clicked in order to enable / disable wifi. I fear the chance of this happening accidentally is remote, coupled with the fact it happens almost daily.
