D'oh! Just realised how old this question is - hopefully you've resolved the issue by now, but if not, hope this helps!

comment The text “Figure” in Figure caption(???) made Word do something bad. Help me get out of this bad state!
Did you open the file as a zip file? Open it with 7-zip or WinZip or whatever, and you'll see 3 folders inside. Check inside the word folder - you'll find the main document.xml file along with many others. Check some of those out for the "Figure" text, and see if you can remove it.

You could probably check this by pressing Shift + J/ Shift + K, and seeing if they trigger your remapped keys Caps Lock key functions.

Have you tried opening the file on another machine? Would help to narrow it down to being either your installation, or the individual file. Can you open other word docs OK?

comment When I move a window partially offscreen, the offscreen part shows on next/previous desktop
Ah, ok, sorry, rjmunro's comment threw me. If you run a 2x2 grid, does it also happen vertically? Seems to be a known bug/feature: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/480228

So it's wrapping around the multiple monitors? Does the cursor wrap round along with the windows? Or is it just the Windows?

Not sure why they would do it, or even if they did. You didn't mention in your question that other users on the same connection are ok, but you did state that that was the only thing to have changed before it stopped working. Are the other users using the same SMTP settings as you?

Have you phoned your ISP to find out if they are blocking the port? It's not as rare as some might think...
