comment Thunderbird: Folder listing suddenly empty
Are you sure you were logged in as yourself? Did you start it as root by sudo, perhaps? Was something else different from other times?

comment Bootable usb for linux (RHEL)
Boot from CD, and choose as installation target the USB-Drive. It is typically enumerated behind the hard drives, so if you have 2 harddrives, they're /dev/sda and sdb, and the usb would be sdc. But try to verify this, somehow (look for the size) to prevent overwriting the wrong stuff.

comment Can two devices with different static IP addresses find eachother?
You need to have different numbers, but they have to be in the same subnet, which can be of different size, depending on the number. For example, in the reserved area of 192.168.x.y, the subnets are 256 IPs big, afaik, while in 10.0.x.y it is (afaik) 256*256 IPs big. Since I know nothing of python, this is just a comment. I only know how to search with nmap or ping.

comment Permissions on a typical shared Linux web host
There is no overall user-permission. The first question is, who is the user, running the PHP-script? This will depend on the server, which is used and its configuration. Servers are mostly started at startup via init-scripts, which means, with root permissions, but root may start them in the name of a third user, like www or www-admin or something. In normal cases the installation will take care of this, and you won't modify permissions of files manually. However, read the manuals of your server and the README files.

Last question first: The users browser runs on a different machine and is in no way of influence. The server does not even know, what permission the user on the remote machine has, and what username is used over there.

I don't see a MS-DOS 1.0 tag, nor 1.0 mentioned. Maybe you can't partition a drive with MS-DOS programs, but you can install an MS-DOS on a partitioned drive. I guess MS-DOS is out of support though, and the tag is there, because many users believe that cmd.exe and MS-DOS means the same, which is another error to address. Apropos: MS-DOS 1.0 was never published.

How long are those files? Will both lists of names easily fit into RAM? Are there filenames containing blanks and other, unusual characters like tab, line feed, page feed and so on?

But d: is a partition, not a drive.
