comment Test whether PHP is correctly installed on my Mac
Find where Apache has its webserver root. I.e. where localhost is on your file system and make your new directory under that, not under /home FI it is not clear where from your Apache config files, you could search your drives for that index.php file

Logging. Does Blast2Go have logging? Turn it on. Google & find out as much as you can about Linux logging in general and network logging in particular. Also, log resource usage, since you say that "the computer running Blast2Go frozen" - maybe out of RAM?

Oh, yes, and what do you about lines like printf("New paragraph follows:\n\n\");? How many lines is that? ;-)

Why not use a proper tool to gather metrics (and maybe do some static code analysis while you are at it). I am guessing that you are only looking for a rough indicator, as you don't seem to have considered whether blank lines / comments should be counted. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_lines_of_code

comment Which part of the registry to save/restore over Windows re-install
@DanielB - one of us is missing something. I am proposing to export then re-import those thousands of registry entries, so I can't see your point. What am I overlooking?

Thanks for the feedback. 1) why would the new installation wouldn't have access to the imported data? Export, then import. Where else are the config data stored? 2) please don't assume that I have a "windows is slow problem". Your point may be valid, but I have the Windows explorer restarts every minute or so problem & none of the many solutions which I found helped.

Does it matter? Eclipse, NetBeans, Delphi (plus Gexperts, plus a dozen+ TMS components), PyCharm, Brackets, PhpStorm - those are the IDEs which I use regularly, there are others. Plus database access tools, static code analyzers, version control, hex editor, Xampp, code formatter, etc, etc, etc. Office suite, anti-virus, Thunderbird, backup program, utility programs, a few games ... It can take days to a week to reinstall it all, and then I have to configure those programs. I could just image Widows on a regular basis, but that could be imaging the problems. Clean Windows, rest unchanged

I want a system clean of Windows gunk. I want to have may coding tools, which are on E:, back as they were, without losing settings & without having to spend hours reinstalling. I don't see problems, so long as I have the Chinese wall of partitioning between Windows on C and the rest on E:, F:, etc. However, if you know of concrete problems, then please let me know. Thanks

Do you also want your Windows 8 data? If so, I hope you backed them up. If you just want a fresh windows 8 machine, google for <model> factory restore

Do you know I can restore a backup? I was using it, find I need to restore and have a few full & many incremental backups and I can't see any way to restore from within the program :-(

Does right click offer nothing at all? If you can select Properties, then Target will give you the command line that you need.

Can you start it from the command line by using an elevated command prompt? windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/…

Of course you would prefer to set & forget "always run as administrator", but, until you get that working, you can right click the icon and select "run as administrator,", although you will have to do that every time that your want to run it.

Why would you ever want to do that? Dynamic IP addresses might not be as common as the once were, but they are still around.

comment Is it 'bad' to read of a drive while writing onto it? Can you read and write 'simultaneously'?
As the answers have said, there will be absolutely no damage. However, multiple access, whether reads, writes or a combination thereof will slow access times slightly as the drive heads will continually have to reposition.
