comment What happened to my recovery partition after upgrading to Windows 8?
ok, the recovery parition is the one before C, the 7.37gB. If you can't format M:, use partition-tool.com to delete it, and expand C: to fill the space. Sicne M: has a drive letter, what happens when you try to open it, or do a dir m: ?

comment Using OEM disks to install Windows 7 partition on Windows 8 laptop
I had thought (hoped) that they had stopped doing that - wiping the entire disk. It has been a long time since I saw it. Can you try on another PC and see what it does? If it does, then what about the Windows 8 install? Does that format the entire drive? If not, back up up your data, install 7 (formtatting the entire drive), create a new parition and install 8 to that. Or just buy a second PC? If you want to develop for the touchscreen aspects of 8 you will porbably have to buy a new device anyway in order to test.

Mayeb its' best not to do that? Or, if you must, then copy to USB thumb drive before leaving the office, and copy onto laptop before making any changes. DropBox will later resynch the dsktop when you have connected the laptop (if you don't connect, then it's back to the USB stick)

+1 I toally agree on source control, but if you can't then get WinMerge or Kdiff3 or any other good, free file compare program

comment What is the advantage of having same size RAM of 1 Dimm instead of 2 Dimm
No technical advantage. Larger chips cost more to manufacture, so they sell for more. The advantage is that you have a limited number of slots and if you want to expand later, it might be best to buy the larger. E.G, imagine only 2 slots and you choose 2 @4gB, then later want to expand, so must throw away 2@ 4gB, but if you had bought one @ 8gB ...

If you can wait, why not contact tech suport at the PC manufacturer and ask them? the drive letter sounds strange (normally recovery prtitions don't have adroive letetr, but you might have added one somehow). Tech support ought to be able to tell you the size of the recovery parition; if this is differnt, then I say delete it. In my experience, the recovery parition is always the first on the disk, before drive C:. What about this one?

And did you ask your campus IT department?

comment Wifi Adapter not working in windows 8
Can it connect to other networks? Does your campus require you to register the machine? (it may be filtering on MAC address). You could try updating the driver, either by Windows update or something like DriverMax. Just be sure to create a restore point first.

comment TrueCrypt drive letter not available
Sorry, @Tono, I cannot help you :-( I compared your mount commands for volumes W and Z and they truly only differ by that one letter. I also tried executing them on my PC and both worked. I can only sugegst that somehow volume W is in use, even though it looks free. Did you try dir w: what about other system utilities, such as easeus partition master? What does that show with erspect to drive W:? I am intruiged. If you find the naswer, please post it.

comment Why can't I set a fixed IP in Windows 7
+1 I haven't attached a router yet, it's a stand-alone PC, but suspect that I will need to change my PCs address to 192.168.1.2 Thanks. And, yes, the subnet mask is correct

comment Why can't I set a fixed IP in Windows 7
Yes, I know that 127.0.0.1 is (by default) localhost. I want my PC to have address 192.168.1.1 and for it and others to be avble to address it that way. Uou may have a good point about router default IP address, so many I should make my PC 192.1.168.1.2 - but my point here is that I can't ping what I thought I set as my static IP and, indeed, it does not show up when I run IPCONFIG - I get the previous value.
