comment Windows can detect router, but cannot connect
fair enough. All I was hoping to do is establish if the information being collected by the utility and/or windows matches the configuration of the router. The question is, is it a router configuration problem or a windows/tp-link problem. For now it may be worth setting the channel to 'Auto' and removing the MAC filtering, see what happens...

Did you install the client utilities for the usb adapter, by default it will have created a link on your desktop? If not you can download the driver and client utilities from a link on the right of the page from the link you posted above. Run the client and see what it finds.

comment Web browser memory usage
I can't comment on chrome as I have no need for it, however, firefox should not be using anything like as much memory. I currently have firefox open with 14 tabs and it's using less than 100Mb. First thing to do is disable all of your extensions and themes then try again. Failing that start the browser in safe mode kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_Mode_(Firefox)

comment Why some standards are called Request For Comments?
If the document you create is for an internal process, I guess you could call it whatever you like. If, however, it's to be a public document, I think you would need to consider it's content and its audience. You may find that within specific disciplines, there are more appropriate formats.

If you have left the default settings, it will be using NAT. Make sure Virtualbox is not being blocked in your firewall
