@aaron that's weird. Try searching for id_dsa/id_rsa. Did you manage to find your answer in any of the linked urls or do you still need help with this?

So I changed my prompt to show the length of history and I'm keeping an eye on it to better understand what would be triggering the truncation. (However I'm now running with HISTFILESIZE set too.) Any sure-fire way to enter a shell that would not have my history settings? (so I can try to test my theory and force a truncation)

Yes, a matter of preference of course. I was just rambling on so as to cater to the endless curiosity of future visitors.

Ok, that was it, I was able to get it to work by setting GatewayPorts to yes in /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Can you please update your answer with this pesky detail?

Could this be to blame? "Specifying a remote bind_address will only succeed if the server's GatewayPorts option is enabled (see sshd_config(5))."

This sounds awesome, but I'm getting an error when trying to connect from macbook: ssh: connect to host MyActualServer port 8022: Connection refused

I do, that's indeed the problem. QuickLook thinks it's MacRoman anyway. Hence the garbling.

Lastly, you may want the reverse of this: superuser.com/questions/88470/…

Also, you probably want to do some reading under the Keychain Integration section here: dribin.org/dave/blog/archives/2007/11/28/ssh_agent_leopard

I assume you mean the OS X Keychain popup? Honestly, the thing is a godsend. But anyway… weird that some times you get it, some times you don't.

Speaking of launchd, WatchPaths and QueueDirectories may do the job without my needing to tap fsevents myself.

Hum, will try that. But this default value of 500 gave me a hint (it's the same for HISTSIZE): maybe when I start a shell that doesn't set these variables, the default of 500 kicks in and truncates my history. Makes sense?
