Well, which is to say, I think this issue is resolved, unless I can trigger it by something else other than sudo. I wonder if the most effective solution is to use a different HISTFILE too? I'd love to accept your answer, but the real answer is scattered in these comments. Can you please update it with a summary?

I just use .profile and source everything from there. Which was the problem, I guess. I added a .bashrc that sources .profile and that seems to fix it. What's funny is sudo -i doesn't even seem to load any of them, and doesn't affect the history. Unix is confusing I wanna go shopping :/

So bash --norc --noprofile didn't trigger the issue, but sudo -s did. I updated the question accordingly.

@aaron that's weird. Try searching for id_dsa/id_rsa. Did you manage to find your answer in any of the linked urls or do you still need help with this?

So I changed my prompt to show the length of history and I'm keeping an eye on it to better understand what would be triggering the truncation. (However I'm now running with HISTFILESIZE set too.) Any sure-fire way to enter a shell that would not have my history settings? (so I can try to test my theory and force a truncation)

Yes, a matter of preference of course. I was just rambling on so as to cater to the endless curiosity of future visitors.

Ok, that was it, I was able to get it to work by setting GatewayPorts to yes in /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Can you please update your answer with this pesky detail?

Could this be to blame? "Specifying a remote bind_address will only succeed if the server's GatewayPorts option is enabled (see sshd_config(5))."

This sounds awesome, but I'm getting an error when trying to connect from macbook: ssh: connect to host MyActualServer port 8022: Connection refused

I do, that's indeed the problem. QuickLook thinks it's MacRoman anyway. Hence the garbling.

Also, you probably want to do some reading under the Keychain Integration section here: dribin.org/dave/blog/archives/2007/11/28/ssh_agent_leopard
