comment How can I send gpg encrypted mail automatically from the linux command line?
Add "s" to the gpg command for that - e.g., gpg -eas -r "John Smith"

I've spent some time looking at tutorials, but I think my usage is a little different than others'. I would like to be able to use variable substitution - so I could write a template like 'Dear $NAME, I am writing to confirm your appointment on $DATE at $TIME' and have those bits replaced - and ideally include conditional logic, something like '<IF $MARRIED>Please bring your spouse. </ENDIF>' Is that among LaTeX's functionality? I get the impression that it's probably possible with macros but I don't want to be forcing it to do something it's not really meant to do.

I'm aware of the Tex family - hadn't considered it for this application because my perception is that it's more presentation/layout focused and because the limited exposure I've had to it suggests that it's very powerful but has a steep learning curve. I will explore it further and see if I was perhaps too hasty in rejecting it. Thanks for your suggestion.

comment What type of barcode scanner do I need to access scanner output in Java app?
I see. Perhaps others can suggest a barcode scanner that doesn't emulate a keyboard. The scanners I'm familiar with don't have a special "port" for you to listen to - I don't know enough about the guts of USB HID handling to address the feasibility of distinguishing "keystrokes" from a scanner versus "keystrokes" from a keyboard.

Also, put a wired jack near wherever you're planning to have a TV. Video over wireless sucks.

The right way to do this is with a wired Cat5e "backbone" (which is probably just a couple of runs of Cat5e to the garage/basement/closet) and at least one wireless device per floor. If you're going to own this house, I can't urge you strongly enough to do this with a wired backbone - people waste so much time and experience so much frustration caused by inadequate infrastructure, and it's just depressing. Wifi is subject to active interference and passive obstructions (like furniture and bookcases and even humans), all of which can be ephemeral and tough to diagnose/fix. Just do it.
