comment Windows 8.1 Dism can't find source even when ISO mounted
I had a similar problem. Assuming you have 8.1 Update 1 installed (KB2919355), you may need an ISO that has the KB2919355 files included. Because the files in the install.wim are older than your system files. Also to mount an ISO in Windows 8, just double click it. I don't have a good source for the ISO with Update 1

comment Can I install Windows to Go to a partition without wiping the drive?
I'm not quite sure I understand your question, but I use a USB disk with several partitions and multiple different Windows To Gos. I could add another one without affecting the existing ones. Maybe that helps. I do create Windows To Go manually, not using the wizard, I never used it, so I don't know how that works.

comment Hosts file missing in Windows 8.1
@Arjan - There is an answer to a question on serverfault (serverfault.com/questions/452268/…), it says when hosts.ics is there, hosts is ignored. I just added a hosts.ics file on my system and Windows seems to use both. But I don't have connection sharing enabled, so I don't know how that behaves. The fact that there is a hosts.old seem to indicate that you shouldn't have both.

comment Hosts file missing in Windows 8.1
Okay, you are right, it is not needed for normal OS operation, but it is checked for and used when found. Windows created hosts.ics an d renamed hosts to hosts.old for a reason. I think you should not have both hosts.ics and hosts at the same time

Of course the hosts file is used for normal system operations, maybe you were thinking of hosts.sam in older versions of Windows.

comment How to install Win 8.1 to HDD as booting it from SSD?
Put Windows on the SSD, I'm doing that for years. The lifetime of SSDs is much better nowadays. If you ever used Windows from an SSD you never want to go back to a HDD.

comment How to check if a binary is 32 or 64 bit on Windows?
I'm on Server 2012 R2 and tried a few random binaries. Some 32bit ones show as Windows XP SP2 but others show as Vista or Windows 8. So this method is not correct.
