comment Can I tell Apple's Time Machine to backup a single folder?
@EvanPlaice tmutil does that. It's man page is at developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/… (and on your mac). You start backups with "tmutil startbackup -a", to get the same effect as starting it from the GUI. But no way that I can see to just backup single folders, though.

From the screenshot I gather you are on Mac OS X? I have the same problem there in terminal. Ctrl+A/E/K are already taken in that OS (for use in text fields in the GUI), which might explain this.

comment Can you reccomend a comprehensive book about Mac OS X internals?
I second that. It's I think the only such (publicly available) book that I know of. I have it and it's quite thorough, though, but does not cover the changes in Leopard and Snow Leopard. A new edition is really needed!

comment Setting default application for text files in bash
edited, thx. Yes -g is for global alias; I use : for "| less", e.g., which I can add to commands.

He didn't use encryption in that case. If he did, this wouldn't work.

comment Installing MySQL on MacOS
So it seems like there is a customize option, going from that linked answer. Good. (I have all the stuff installed anyway, but I had enough space at the time).

yep, it's a lot of stuff. But eh, you've got a nice IDE as well (and all the iPhone stuff, like the simulator) I don't recall if there's an advanced install that disallows iPhone stuff, e.g.
