comment Can a Yahoo employee read my email?
Just to add to all the answers: worrying about one's email is probably paranoid, considering that most bank employees can access your account data just as easily - and in that case, ALL data is sensitive.

comment Bluetooth speakers lag
@Psycogeek: well you could delay the video then! Although in most videogames that would be just as bad... :(

comment How do I minimize idle I/O on Linux to decrease noise?
Best answer by far, finally someone that goes in some technical detail rather than just suggesting common sense really!

Summarizing the various hdparm switches in the answer would be useful.

This answer would be more useful if you elaborated a bit on how to monitor drive access, and/or listed common causes for it to be accessed.

comment firefox addons and their silly news tabs
If you never use the "save current session" feature, you might have some luck in running a script that somehow makes sure that, at startup, you end up having a single tab set to your homepage. Other than that, I'm afraid these plugins are just using standard features to display new pages, so I can't see how you could prevent them from doing it. Contacting each developer and telling them to offer an option to avoid that might be worth the trouble... given that they update so often ;)
