comment How to find out what computers are connected to an access point/router using Linux terminal?
well just to make sure I did ifconfig to ifconfigfind my network ip and it returned inet addr as 192.168.1.101 so I then did nmap -A -T4 192.168.1.101 and got this back Starting Nmap 5.00 ( nmap.org ) at 2011-02-12 16:48 CET Note: Host seems down. If it is really up, but blocking our ping probes, try -PN Nmap done: 1 IP address (0 hosts up) scanned in 2.09 seconds

This does not work for me. I have 'Show Disabled Devices' already checked and I only see 'Microphone' and 'FM' there.

Yes this ended up working. I changed the router channel to 11 and followed with the acer's Wireless card channel. Thanks

comment How can I get my router and Inprocomm IPN2220 wireless network card connected?
@JNK just trying to be as thorough as possible to solve this very stressful problem. @Sathya Like in my comment to your answer below I see that my network card does not support WPA2 but my router does have the ability to encrypt in WPA2 mixed which leads me to believe it could work since the newer Vista laptop NIC can take WPA2 and the older Acer XP laptop NIC 'only' accepts WPA. What do you think? I found this link supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-4349 but I am not sure if WPA2 mixed would defiantly work and I don't want to risk a security break.

comment How can I get my router and Inprocomm IPN2220 wireless network card connected?
I have added 2 links to the router and wireless card properties galleries to the top of the post. here they are again. router: picasaweb.google.com/adam.siddhi/ImagesRouter# wireless card: picasaweb.google.com/adam.siddhi/ImagesWireless# . One thing that I do notice when looking through the screen shots is that my router's wireless settings show that it's encrypting with WPA2-PSK with AES. I have the option to change it to WPA and WPA2 mixed. I also noticed that I do not have to option to use WPA2 at all on my older Acer laptop. But could WPA2 mixed work?

comment How can I connect my XP laptop to my wireless network if my wireless network doesn't show up in the list?
I am in Europe and @openfkg said that I will only be able to broadcast from Channel 13 which my router is set to. I think the problem is in my Wireless Card driver which I am having trouble configuring.

comment How do I connect my Windows XP laptop to the internet?
@Molly7244 h I am checking my router now and it says that it uses WPA2 in the WPA Authentication Mode: Personal (Pre-Shared Key). Now how do I check what my Acer's NIC's encryption type is? Yes I am currently using the Wireless Zero Configuration service.

although I assume that the Acer NIC is broadcasting b/g because I saw it online in the spec sheet for it . I did not actually check the Acer itself. How would I check that?

I checked my router just now and it says that its BAND = 2.4ghz (B+G) and my Acer Travelmate 2300 NIC is broadcasting 802.11 b/g.

Ok I went to Wireless Network Connection Properties and in the Preferred Networks area I pressed Add. I typed in the Network name, set Network Authentication to WPA-PSK, choose TKIP as Data Encryption, typed my Network Key in two times and pressed ok. Still I get no connection. What else can I do?

@JNK the router is a Techniclan WAR-54G. The XP laptop is sitting right next to it so this is not an issue of weak signal strength. How would I check to see if it is in restrictive mode?

comment When I move the physical volume control on my Toshiba laptop it is triggering the 'c' and 'b' key. How come?
it actually changes the volume but in unexpected ways. sometimes when i try to decrease the volume it actually increases. when i try to increase the volume, the volume position will shake up and down very fast and slowly go up at the same time (if you can picture this). perhaps the contacts are dirty.
