comment How to diff large files on Linux
nice, I think -q is the key here, somehow not having it can require diff to put the whole file (or at least whole lines) into memory...

paman may work (worked for me in Ubuntu): superuser.com/questions/146784/…

I wasn't able to figure out how to adjust a single stream, however I did have success adjusting an output device "to 480%" via paman -> devices tab -> select a sink -> "properties" button -> drag volume slider to right.

comment Are there netcat-like tools for Windows which are not quarantined as malware?
unfortunately "ncat" (the command line executable provided by the nmap distro) doesn't seem to be a drop in replacement for the unix "nc" command [different command line parameters] <sigh>...you have to get a true "netcat" somewhere else [or use cygwin]

I believe this is just the "cygwin" netcat, and installed to a temp folder, so not accessible outside "MobaXterm" [however, it does work from inside its shell].

Yes, note that this site has a download with a "non -e" version that apparently is more friendly for virus scanners.

can other apps record the mic ok for long periods of time? what about ffmpeg with only audio input?

be careful, with newer ffmpeg’s you need to use “-framerate” instead of “-r” for the input framerate: trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/DirectShow#Specifyinginputframerate

(nowadays it has no free version, only trialware). Anyway this doesn't actually extend the desktop, but it does "move windows" (like infinite screen) to give you the illusion of more space [FWIW].

this is a clever utility [basically, it allows you to pan the existing windows on a screen, it doesn't per se expand your desktop, the desktop stays the same size]. Very interesting, and working here for win7.

This basically only allows you to "display 1280x1024 on a 1024x768 monitor" (not virtually extend a 1024x768 monitor) is that right?
