Try it in an external case, in another desktop or laptop. First you need to make sure it's not hardware related.

comment Building a small home server
Windows 2000, 2003 and XP are all EOL. Windows 7 or 2008 is not an option for such a machine. Wireshark runs on Linux, and I bet there are good alternatives for "the Dude" that run on Linux. My advice is to buy a Raspberry PI for $40 and use that, but I suppose you can get Linux running on that machine as well.

What Windows applications do you need to run? With 256MB RAM I can't think of anything "Windows" that will work that is not totally out of date security wise.

If you have many computers in your local network, have you tried another client computer to see if that one has the same problems? Try to determine if the problem is in the network or in that one computer!

OK what if it's the speaker, what can you do about that except reconnecting? It probably has no interface for bluetooth.

Is there some policy active that distributes printer settings across the network? Are you using AD?

Keep using the desktop version for local work. There's no reason to switch to the server version, unless you want to force yourself to become comfortable with commanline only. Did this work OK when you had the laptop in the same room? I don't think it's likely, but if moving the laptop to another room causes this problem, it might be related to the switch or router you're using. Maybe it's system overload?

comment How can a printer installation change the default printer of other computers?
Did you use the same IP address for this printer, or do you use DHCP for the printer and did it get the IP address of the old printer?

The least you can do is tell us what FTP server you're using, what server OS, if the firewall is active, what client FTP program you use. Has it worked before or is this a new install? And tell us what you've done to test so we don't come with suggestions for things you've already done. If you don't show that you've put some effort in it, less people will take the effort to answer!
