It's not a real answer as it just happened to work on this keyboard. I'll let someone else answer if they know how.

@BBlake: Yes, that would be a big problem. I don't think there are any special keys I don't have on the new keyboard or don't have access for through the start menu - a bit clumsier, but workable. Of course.. I might build some sort of lid over the keys, but I'm hoping for some simpler solution.

The problem is space. The keyboard is thin, so I'd like to put it on top of the laptop keyboard. But then the keyboard keeps pressing keys like "home" which makes it a bit difficult to use :)

Thanks! I think you just found my problem! I need a restart to be sure though. Remote Adminitrator has installed a Mirror Driver, and it's obviously enough for windows that the program and background service is closed/stopped for Aero to work. Mind writing your tips as an answer so I can accept it? Rebooting :)

Win7 Enterprise x64. Restarted DWM and reran the diagnostics - same problem. Also tried related troubleshooters, but I only found one that didn't detect any problems (Display Quality)

That's the diagnostic tool I've been running. And it doesn't give me any details. I tried reindexing, but that didn't report any problems, and the diagnostic message remain the same. But I just noticed that the details for the error notes a potentional issue: "Aero effects not supported on this Windows edition" - Could the problem actually be my display driver having problems for x64 and not a mirrored driver at all..?

The problem is that I cannot figure out what program is using this mirror drive*r*. I just got the new computer (laptop), and I don't think Aero has been enabled at all.

You mean a different layout? This is not a new problem - I've experienced it on many different computers and keyboards over a long time. I have just gotten used to doing it the hard way, but my hands are getting tired, and I need to start thinking about minimizing key presses.

Depends on how often you use the characters I guess. When programming in D that is using ~ for array concatenation and ` for string literals, I experience it quite often. It doesn't seem related to a specific editor or version of Windows either.
