comment How can I produce high CPU load on Windows?
That's the output of creating the script and running it.

comment Mystery Pop-up Window
A wsh which can catch the titles of windows might be more effective. E.g., the titles which would be caught by AppActivate.

I should have added that nothing appears on the taskbar. I'll give the script a shot. I'm doubtful only because it's sooo fast and without the icon on the taskbar, the window probably belongs to an existing app. Any screen capture utility would need to record video. This thing appears and disappears within maybe 50ms..

comment Laser Printer Jagged Lines
Good point on the fonts... the graphics are suffering too though. The issue looks far worse blown up in the image above than at scale. I might replace the printer when the toner runs dry. It's time to go for something with built-in duplexing :-)

To the best of my knowledge, there's no concept of alignment in a laser printer. Not sure what you're referring to in the manual. The section describing horizontal streaks and smears?

I thought it was aliasing at first too, which is why I tried the test page. The printer is long out of support, I thought I would post the question here before looking for a new printer. - by "printer test page" I mean, pressing and holding the button on the printer so that it prints something from its own program. No computer involved.

I've never heard of this setting in a laser printer. Do you have an example?

comment Is it possible to put a spreadsheet in Thunderbird templates that will calculate?
I just tried it in Office 2010, Outlook accepts an Excel object with a paste-special. I wouldn't use the functionality though, it's asking for trouble for privacy and compatibility. Especially if you're sending stuff like quotes. You don't want the customer to see the math under your quote.

comment How to fully clean hard disk before further use?
Note that the dd command will destroy the content of the target disk "of=/dev/sdb" without warning. Be careful.

comment How can I have paragraph spacing for normal paragraphs, but no paragraph spacing within tables?
For those who wonder the tickbox in English is "Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style" -- totally not an obvious solution, but works perfectly for me. Thanks!

comment Windows 7 Update Dialog Steals Focus
Manual's a good try, but no luck. I'm already applying manually because I sometimes tether and I would never allow Windows to update over my phone. So I manually say "apply the updates"... it sometimes takes 30 minutes or so for updates to apply. It can be a day or so before I actually reboot the machine.

Trouble is it would have already asked once. Unless you stop applying updates, which is a ridiculous thing to have to do to get around this problem.

comment Windows file's default action to open with a vbs script?
The cmd window appears because cmd.exe is launched when the .cmd or .bat file is started. start /min won't help.

comment Windows file's default action to open with a vbs script?
n.b., there are problems with this method, e.g, opening readme.txt in two directories would make it appear as though the second file contained the content from the first. I'll touch it up with a better method later, just worried about getting it working for now.

comment Windows file's default action to open with a vbs script?
Thanks, it does work... the only thing that sucks is the black window which appears for a few seconds. Any thoughts about preventing it or reducing its visibility?

comment Old VAX machine crashed need to recover files
xmodem or similar might be able to transfer files out by minicom with a vt220 emulation mode. Provided you can get an rs232 port and nullmodem to get it to speak to your PC.

comment Can a Raspberry Pi be reconfigured to reboot automatically if the SDcard becomes unreadable?
No overclocking and it's only a few months in the field. Swapping the SD Card won't be possible for a few months. Agreed though, it's the right thing to try. Just not possible for a while.

comment How do I prevent my computer from freezing when it starts to swap?
Note that the behaviour of gradually paging stuff out is to prevent exactly this kind of problem... tweaking swappiness can lead to really poor performance all at once. Not that Darth implied tweaking it, just an FYI, tweaking swappiness is not the answer. Finding the culprit with something like iotop guichaz.free.fr/iotop could help.

comment Quick Image Editing tools for MacOS
@Vickash, I'll give it a shot. We all get used to the quirks of our environment, I'm sure to any Mac user, Irfanview and MSPaint seems like an abomination.
