comment What laptop manufacturers have raised keyboards in their products?
They go down to the top of the keyboard, so there is very little space between the edges. The key doesn't go into the laptop per se but it does fit flush and the keys are sized just right for the hole. It is not like a normal laptop keyboard and I think it would be very hard to get food in this one.

comment Video card and monitor don't work with each other, fine with other cards/monitors
I had a similar problem. I connected my 6870 to my brother's Asus monitor and it wouldn't display for the life of me. But I hook it up to my Asus or Princeton monitor and it works fine. Not sure what the problem is/was but since it wasn't my monitor I didn't look into it too much. If you have displayport on the video card you could try getting a DP to DVI cable.

comment Upgrading memory on the mac - how to solve problems that may arise
Sorry it wasn't a more comprehensive answer. You didn't provide the exact macbook pro model so I couldn't select what memory would be best for you. ECC is really only for Servers, I don't believe I've ever seen it in anything but. It looks like you figured it out so that is great! Enjoy the extra memory. :)

comment Bad motherboard?
Seems to be working. So it would appear that it was actually a bad motherboard. But get this; the new harddrive they sent was bad! Plugged it in right out of the box and it makes horrid clicking noises.

Yeah Macs don't allow any config. So just try to get the same speed. Like Scott said, Crucial's website makes selection pretty easy so check that out. Like I said I've used Crucial on many Macs with no problems what so ever and I used their memory finder too.

comment As SSDs get faster and Level 2 caches get bigger, could RAM become redundant?
Plus the memory controller is built on the CPU these days giving even better speeds. Like Xantec said it'll be a long time before RAM is totally done away with. We are just now scratching the surface of SSDs and even if they were a lot faster than they are now I'm thinking it would require some hefty hardware rethinking by Intel/AMD and chipset manufacturers.

Yeah I hate it when I come across stuff like that too. But you just have to live with it or complain to the owner of the site.

Higher speed shouldn't be a issue. But Macs don't really let you control the hardware quite like other computers do, so I wouldn't be surprised if it got caught up on it. But you are right that it should work. I would try to use crucial and see if that works for you. Like I said I've used them in Mac Minis and Macbook Pros (among other things).

Cool! Those pictures sure can take up a lot of space. Easy to accumulate quite a few, especially with editing and keeping originals. :)

NP, I'm actually thinking about picking up the DS1010+ to replace my wife's 4 drive OWC setup. She is a photographer and needs to store TBs of pictures and the DS1010+ would be perfect considering it can be expanded with the DX510.

I was looking at their compare list and the DS410 or DS411+ might be a better option as they both have wake on LAN and better specs/performance.

Nice! I like the look of the QNAP and Synology boxes since they have some a very broad set of features and some good RAID setup features(IE. Online expansion and Online RAID level migration). That makes the Synology box even more attractive since you would have support and a "all in one" package that has a small footprint.
