While not solving my problem, I've started using Handbrake and using the x.264 encoding. It's working well.

Nope, the new terminal is just inheriting the uid/gids from what started it (probably your window manager)

Oh, I've been writing & building RPMs for a while, I'm good. :) BTW, this particular LD_ASSUME_KERNEL would only apply on any 2.4.x kernels.

The data is already ripped to disk and the data is good. As I noted afterwards, I can run it twice and have it hang once.

-o /dev/null is correct for the first pass of a multi-pass encode. Besides, the problem isn't that no output is produced.
