You didn't ask, but fixing the Target to a valid path makes the icon reappear.

1. Yes it shows the correct icon. 2. Correct, you can't change the icon if the current Target is invalid, so I can't test that.

As I stated in the question, this laptop has no battery. It was powered down completely before I removed it from the base station and started moving it. +1 for the great info.
