comment Does printer ink evaporate with time?
needless to say, unless you are printing colour photos, use a laser. They are about £40 these days and you can refill the toner for £15 to do another 3000 pages. I know alot of people still using inkjets to print documents.

comment Should I install 32-bit or 64-bit Linux?
on the other hand, linux will run fast on 3gb of ram, so you might as well just stick with a normal kernel unless you find yourself hitting that limit often. Which on an old dell box seems unlikely.

comment Lastpass VS Sxipper. which one is better at their thing?
I don't now about sxipper, but lastpass can also use two factor yubikeys which helps. They recently had a tiny amount of unexpected traffic on their network and took pretty conclusive counter measures to protect the end users, which is encouraging. It goes without saying dont use either of these systems to store any sensitive passwords, but rather the many, many low-security passwords you need everyday to live online (and even then you can bump them up a bit now you dont need to remember them).

comment Why aren't all CPUs 'overclocked' as a factory default?
as an aside: how exactly do you "overclock" something by default ? the factory set the default to begin with.

+1. It's also fairly likely that the damage will slowly expand in size, i've seen that happen a few times.

just to clarify by "the firewall" you mean a hardware firewall out on the university network yes ? Not the firewall of the actual machine your scanning ? i.e: Are you worried abuot the network admins getting annoyed at your scanning, or are you trying to check your local firewall works ?
