comment Why does systemd hang during reboot?
Is it on the way down it hangs? Can you share with us what services are enabled on the system? Any custom-made ones? How did you conclude that systemd hangs?

This answer seems to answer a different question than the one asked.

comment Is there a way to add a Crashplan friend without a friend code?
You could easily "fix" this with the help of Teamviewer or similar remote-control software once you get back. Teamviewer is very user-friendly and you could easily get your non-technical friend to start it up with you on the phone or even by email instructions.

comment All VMware (Player) Machines are “corrupt”
Is the disk full? Does other disk operations work as expected on this disk and/or directory? Any security software (such as antivirus) running amok? Are you clean from malware?

comment SPOF-less distributed file system?
I believe Ceph is also shared-nothing, fully redundant. They have a POSIX-compliant filesystem.

comment How can I do `dir *.mp3` in bash?
Note that it is the interpreter (bash) that does the wildcard substitution. Thus, ls *.mp3 could result in a very long list (out of memory / command line too long), depending on how many files that match the globbing pattern. bash actually calls "ls aGoodSong1.mp3 boringSong2.mp3 coolSong.mp3" (if you have those 3 files). A workaround: ls | grep -i '[.]mp3$' (where ls lists all files and grep shows only the .mp3 files)
