comment Is there a good free file viewer for windows?
@JulianKnight if any americans have seen "little britain" they might not believe the whole polite thing.. maybe you are still polite in sheffield. BTW, your website's history section, after a 1998 entry about acorn, you then go to 1990.. I wonder if that 1998 entry should read 1988

Re IRfanview, it's very unclear what you are talking about. Irfanview's file open dialog box looks rather like the regular one but set to preview mode i.imgur.com/virT3Iu.png

@JulianKnight not just good manners.. but a close vote without a comment is below rude and below careless, it's ineffective communication

comment Get Random Folder name and write it as %FolderName%
this may help part of the way echo "c:\blah\folder-name_random-string" | grep -Po "(?<=_).*$" and this for /f %f in ('echo asdf') do set a=%f You / somebody has just gotta somehow find out how to combine the two!

most won't understand you. I think you want to take that string "C:\DIR\FOLDER-NAME_Random-String" and set an environment variable to equal Random-String which is what follows the last _ until the end of the string.

@mythofechelon Interesting idea. This may be relevant to that stackoverflow.com/questions/22286433/… "Open all files in a folder using notepad++"

comment Can cygwin shell interfere with git bash when using Git Bash Here?
dunno n i've hardly used git, but perhaps you can clarify when you say it shows your home directory, is that /home or /home/user? and maybe this is relevant stackoverflow.com/questions/1494658/…

And i've removed the -1 since you've now noted the flaw in your edited answer.

comment Set brightness to zero in Windows (like in Ubuntu)
-1 It's obvious the OP is already aware of this, and the OP asked for a setting to turn the backlight OFF which this clearly doesn't. And the OP said reduce the minimum brightness, so he was obviously aware that windows has that slider to adjust brightness and has a minimum

comment Set brightness to zero in Windows (like in Ubuntu)
@PhucNguyen flux and dimmer won't dim the taskbar so the OP has concluded quite reasonably, that they aren't reducing the light, and thus aren't saving any battery, and that they must be dimming the pixels excluding the taskbar

may be relevant arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1193925 a "neutral density filter" a vinyl sheet that reduces brightness.

@sanchises damn.. how can you spot the difference between making the pixels darker and the brightness lower?

comment How can a process run from a command line without specifying a drive letter before the path?
there is also a system drive variable %SYSTEMDRIVE% but to prove it uses it, i'm not sure how one would. One could prove that it detects the system drive though, by running it from other system drives. It seems to me obvious that it's using the system drive 'cos I can't see any other methods it would or could use. But even then, whether it directly uses that %SYSTEMDRIVE% variable or not is another matter

comment Using wildcard in notepad++ to replace a very specific range of entries/values
@Dane I don't think the question emphasised that it meant files as clearly as it could, though it clearly meant files. If it was just one file then he could just do search and replace in notepad. I think the answer has some value and is well written, but assuming my interpretation is correct, then the answer just misses the point a bit. But it's still well put and a good regex. So, to the answerer, no I don't think you should scrap it

-1 good regex but you miss the point. He is trying to do this to xml fileS (plural) more than one file
