Stack Exchange Q&A site proposal: Joomla

For some reason this question (from Oct 2010) has more recently been deleted but was still available on stackprinter.com. I had the accepted answer and was looking high and low for it to use as reference on another question.

comment OpenOffice Writer: preserve hyphen in text
Just semantics, but isn't it the other way around... replacing a hyphen with a dash? Have you checked the AutoCorrect options... Format > AutoCorrect > AutoCorrect Options... (at least that is the menu item in LibreOffice). There are specific options for "Replace Dashes" as well as the usual "Replace" options. Although to be honest I don't think any of these options should be replacing a single hyphen with a dash (as in your example) - at least not in "LibreOffice".

comment Site links blocked by Google Chrome 33 pop-up blocker
So I assume your popup capability is simply provided by the target="_blank" attribute? You aren't using JS to generate a popup? In that case it would seem that your WordPress plugins that (I assume) attach JS event handlers to those anchors are causing problems for the popup-blocker!?

What if you disable JavaScript?

comment Site links blocked by Google Chrome 33 pop-up blocker
What do your "site links" look like, how are popups triggered? Does the code you have given trigger any JS event handlers / popups? To be honest, I've not noticed anything different with Chrome 33 in this respect.

comment Keeping Firefox from adding “.html” to url
That was probably it! FWIW I've found Opera to hold on to its cache even more than Firefox - quite a problem sometimes when you're trying to test things.

comment Prevent programmers from adding functionality to the back button in browsers
"This is especially the case for single page sites" - The problem here is that the "programmer" is perhaps not implementing the "single page site" correctly. The "programmer" cannot change the back-button behaviour directly, however, they can manipulate what "pages" go into the browser history. The problem, however, is that the "programmer" is not manipulating the browser history (more work) so the back button may look as if it is broken.

comment Keeping Firefox from adding “.html” to url
Yes, this sounds like a browser cache problem (not history). The browser should never simply add .html to a URL - that would be a serious fault of the browser. Browsers do cache external redirects (such as 301 redirects). However, the code you posted above is an internal rewrite - the browser would not cache this as it doesn't see it.

comment Is it possible to clear DNS cache globally?
It's just that you would need to redirect to an IP address (as you suggest), rather than a domain name (since that is already cached by the client; pointing to the wrong IP). A shared server (one IP address for multiple websites) requires the domain name in order to resolve to the required website. ?

comment Is it possible to clear DNS cache globally?
Presumably you would only be able to implement the redirect if you are not on a shared server?

comment Tooltips in Chrome do not work
That Amazon example has both a JavaScript "tooltip/popup" and an HTML tooltip and sometimes the JS tooltip takes priority... Just as another quick test, if you hover over the "share" link above do you (or not) see the text "short permalink to this question"?

comment How to run OpenDNS updater silently
Curious... I never get notified that the IP address was updated. Only if I manually check the "IP updates history" can I see when it changed (and I'm not set to run hidden).
