Please explain how the 2 routers operate. Why would turning them off enable you to get a wireless signal? Do you mean you reboot them? Is one of them merely a signal booster?

Probably a good time to change the SSID, so you can immediately tell if you're connecting to the rogue network. Whilst you're at it, make sure you're not using WEP.

Probably not the cable. "Sometimes" is the biggest clue; to me that implies it's some electrical issue rather than an "auto-detect speakers plugged in and mess with display settings" software problem. Does it reproduce twice in short succession? Try grounding the jack first (touch it against metal part of a radiator).
