comment Bitlocker Performance Impact on SSD
Been using BitLocker with Intel and Samsung SSDs, haven't noticed any performance degradation before/after enabling BitLocker. I have large .PST files (Outlook) and fairly large source trees / large solutions (VS), as you mentioned.

comment High RAM use on Win7 Laptop
Also note that Win7 does have a lot of services running, those all add up with their RAM usage.

comment Enable smooth scrolling in Excel for large cells
FWIW, this is a usability issue with every version of Excel that I have ever used, and on various OS versions through the years.

comment Is it safe to power on a motherboard outside of its case?
@Ruslan Yes the motherboard has a grounding connection around each of the screw holes, you're right about the circular solder leads. However those are "optional" grounding connections, the "main source" of ground must come from the PSU itself, some of the cables provide this. Grounding the main case and the PSU case is an extra safety feature. Having the motherboard out in the open loses that extra safety feature.

comment Are CPUs more stable with one or more cores disabled?
Yes, however more bang for your buck disabling a real core vs. disabling hyper-threading, which according to 11 yr old docs, is only an extra 5% of the core's die.

comment Why does RAM have to be volatile?
Yay memristor technology, it will be at least 10 yrs or more before we see cool products based on these "new" devices. But they should hold a ton of promise for memory implementations.

comment Backing up Windows 7 clean installation for restore purposes
Maybe you just want some harddrive space back? Much simpler to run WinDirStat and see what's using the space. Not sure what that warrants a clean OS install.

comment Should I compress hard drives containing large video files?
Thanks for the clarification. No, compressing the entire harddrive will not compress these files any better than they are now, but it will help with other files types, which might turn out to be minimal anyways if most of the space is taken up by compressed video files.

@Keltari ISO file, you can get this by ripping the disk, creates a perfect image of the disk as one single file on your harddrive. Actual DL dual layer DVD would be about 8GB, BluRay is about 30-40GB, my mistake.

comment What to do when machine fails a Prime95 stress test?
Oops, my little brain just assumed that Prime95 was GPU-accelerated (it's not). Sooooo... wacky crashes with large memory sets? Try swapping the RAM sticks first. Have you tried a thorough memory diagnostic?

Right, make perfect sense. Can you borrow a friend's video board temporarily for testing purposes? That's my first guess as to what to try.

@Keltari Interesting, but what about BluRay disk images?

You might a flaky device driver and/or flaky hardware, the only thing to do is to replace hardware one at a time, and see if the problem goes away, very tedious.
