comment Why is there a difference in the popup dialog from .gvimrc and command line?
Thanks. You're probably right. Your solution was also suggested by @Heptite. I just wonder if this should be reported as a bug, as he suggested (probably not, as this is expected assuming the GUI really get restarted after the init scripts).

Thanks for the answer. Putting this on the startup file did not mean to be something permanent, just me playing with the startup files and the newly discovered confirm() function. I was just surprised to see this behaviour. Your solution on Edit Two makes sense (and was confirmed by @IngoKarkat).

Unfortunately, this variation fails either.

I wonder why there is a difference between the two edit forms. The edit (no args) version works when the last active buffer was the one with the changed file.

I used edit MyBn instead of the edit command. But, when selecting the load File button, I get error E811 and the buffer won't update. I think my alternative answer is more direct.

Out of respect to you answering my question, I will not reply to your last comment. If my intentions were not clear with what said so far, then probably nothing more I'll say won't change it. Thanks again for your help.

So I wanted to test this thing. Defiend a new group :aug my_test_group. Then, defined an autocmd: au my_test_group FileChangedShell * confirm("TEST","&Y\n&N",2,"W"). Changed the buffered file externally. When returned focus to gVim, I get an error: E492: Not an editor command: confirm(.... I cannot run the confirm() command from the : command prompt either.

Thanks. Vim is just amazing. Every time a semi-advanced question is answered, it opens a Pandora's box... Looking at the suggested help page, there seems to be a whole new world of those events...
