Not personally, no. I know a few people who have, though.

Unfortunately, I doubt it's as simple as a permissions issue. I've tried installing as user with local admin privileged as well as the administrator user.

Can you hear the platters spin up? Can you hear the actuator arm clicking? Does it click 3-5 times and stop, or does sound like a bubbling brook? Opening up the drive will expose it to dust particles, which are extremely unhealthy for it.

Also, if the infection prevents you from running malwarebytes, you may need to run it in safe mode with networking.

running a registry cleaner is usually the last step, not the first. If you do this first before removing the infection, you run the risk of causing damage.

comment Windows updates fail to install on XP SP3 with error 0x8007001F
chkdsk was clean. Nothing out of the ordinary happened with the workstation that I'm aware of. I am not the primary user of the workstation, so I couldn't tell you. I did attempt to restore to a point a few weeks prior, but that didn't help. After the reformat, none of the issues resurfaced.

I may have mistakenly copied & pasted the wrong link. I had a number of them open at the same time.

I greatly appreciate the detailed and comprehensive post. Unfortunately, none of those proposed solutions ended up solving the issue. Considering that I've already wasted enough time on this issue, it's time to play the reformat game instead.

comment Can't insert cells in Excel 2010 - “operation not allowed” error message
I followed the instructions and deleted all the rows from the end of my data to the last row (ten thousand and something). That seems to have done it. I'm still puzzed as to why/how this happened, as I haven't done anything different than I usually do.

If I right click on a column number and click "insert", I get this error "to prevent possible loss of data, excel cannot shift n onblank cells off of the worksheet. select another location in which to insert new cells, or delete the data from the end of your worksheet. If you do not have data in cells that can abe shifted off the worksheet, you can reset which cells excel considers nonblank. To do this, press ctrl+end to locate the last nonblank cell on the worksheet. Delete this cell and all cells between it and the last row and column of your data then save"

Ah-ha, I was still trying to right click a row number, rather than on an individual cell. After that, I was able to follow your instructions. However, now there's a new error message.

comment How do I determine how future-proof and stable a router is?
3rd-party firmware, such as dd-wrt and tomato, often include many more features than the stock firmware includes. You might want to look into a wireless router that is listed on the websites of 3rd-party firmware if you choose to go that route.
