comment Can I run a private Bittorrent Sync central server that replicates data but does not decrypt it?
The sync spec mentions "relay servers" that facilitate connections between nodes that are firewalled. Those can work without knowing the secret. I guess what I am looking at is a "proxying relay server" that can push data between nodes even when they are not online at the same time.

That would protected the data when the server is shut down, but not when it is active (which it is supposed to be all the time), because then the disk would be mounted.

Those are all source code files. If you put them in a version control system (Mercurial or git is really easy to start with) and push changes to a remote repo (that is being backed up or mirrored again), then you don't really need another backup scheme.

comment Where does sandboxing stop?
"If the specific user may not have permission to access some of them". That sounds very implausible. Sandboxed apps still run under the given user's permissions, only limiting the app further.

comment How well is an Apache Subversion repository suited to facilitating collaborative editing of multiple .docx, .doc, .xls(s), etc. files?
@jhstuckey: Yes. But then, Dropbox is much easier to setup and use

Do you know if it still works on recent Firefox and OS versions? The comments on the plugin page make me worry.

That of course only works if typing in the IP address would have worked in the first place, i.e. not if the web site depends on the host name being present in the request.

comment How can I scan multiple pages into a single PDF?
In recent versions (10.8), Preview will let you scan directly into a combined document. There is a checkbox now for this in the Scan dialog. superuser.com/a/544836/4577

For me it is completely empty. Legacy cruft would be my guess.

comment Can I build a VPN on top of Tor?
Take a look at NoScript. You can restrict the JS that runs quite effectively. Does not matter how you call it. Not loading all the external JS also prevents most of the tracking cookies. And any way this is completely irrelevant to the question.

@curiousguy: Not if by sandboxed I mean "do not load all those tracking cookies and Facebook widgets without my explicit permission". Or just "do not start the JS until I say so".

comment Getting to the command line in Windows 8
+1. Nice. But so many options to do things. Microsoft has now officially entered the same realm of confusion as Apple with Dashboard, Launchpad, Spotlight, Mission Control, Recent Items Menu etc. I suppose this is what one would call a transitional period. We'll have to wait for a few years for things to shake out, I guess.
