I've written software for everything from network equipment to Apache helicopters. Although I mostly program in C++ now, it was actually my seventh language I used professionally, so I like to think I can still think outside the C++ box.

comment Can't run monodevelop without gksu on ubuntu
Tough to tell without retracing your steps from the beginning, but I've seen similar things happen if the first time that folder is created I was running as root, maybe even as part of the installer.

comment Which gigabit NICs are supported by Ubuntu out of the box?
I have an rtl8169 that is working fine, but I don't use Samba. Are you seeing that mentioned issue specifically? NICs are one thing that almost all of them work on Linux, so you can usually grab any off the shelf.

comment Which programs can edit huge XML files comfortably?
If you rename gvim to evim it will start up in an easy mode for casual users. It makes it non-modal and sets up key bindings the way you probably expect.

comment Linux redirectors not logging errors. Does Linux have the equivalent to Windows' 2>&1?
The funny thing is I had no idea 2>&1 worked on windows, so I thought I read the question wrong at first. Moral of the story: sometimes the equivalent in the other OS is identical.

comment Vim equivalent to Emacs C-i?
= is the standard way for C-like languages, but it looks like you are using a more python-like language, which usually requires some extra setup, such as here: henry.precheur.org/vim/python

It looks from those hits like mysys() is just a commonly defined user function.

comment Where to get Ubuntu 10.04 (not 10.04.1)?
It's gone for a good reason: 1500 security and bug fixes that would get applied immediately after installing anyway. Can I ask why you want the old version? There might be another way to accomplish what you need.

Maybe you are missing /usr/local/lib/whatever from your $LD_LIBRARY_PATH?

comment Connect to Linux by name rather than IP
Also, FYI allowing connections via ssh as root is generally considered a bad idea security-wise. It's recommended to log in as a regular user and use su or sudo from there.
