I've written software for everything from network equipment to Apache helicopters. Although I mostly program in C++ now, it was actually my seventh language I used professionally, so I like to think I can still think outside the C++ box.

comment Connect to Linux by name rather than IP
Also, FYI allowing connections via ssh as root is generally considered a bad idea security-wise. It's recommended to log in as a regular user and use su or sudo from there.

Are you trying to connect just from within your LAN or from anywhere in the world?

comment How do I configure xdmx on my Ubuntu machines?
Sorry about that, it's been a long time since I personally did it. I believe all the manual configuration you need is at library.gnome.org/admin/gdm/2.30/…

comment Why don't I have TRIM on Ubuntu 10.04 + ext4 + Samsung SSD UM41 + Latitude 13?
Does hdparm -I explicitly say you're not using TRIM, or does it not mention it at all? The reason I ask is I believe you need a relatively recent version of hdparm.

comment Utility for different Wine installation for different programs
Sorry, misunderstood the question. There used to be a separate utility program for this, but in recent versions you want to set the $WINEPREFIX environment variable to the name of the directory where wine stores its data. Defaults to $HOME/.wine.

comment How to mitigate the multi-core “performance penalty”
See cyberciti.biz/tips/… for how to lock a process to a core. Some RAM is faster than others. That's probably what you were seeing.

comment losing internet connection via router
Sounds like your internal and external networks might be conflicting. What address do you use to log in to the router, and what address gets assigned to the PC when connected directly to the modem?

Yes, that would work. You just need the router to be between the wireless interface and the Internet.

comment Should I upgrade my LinkSys WRT54GL firmware?
That remote management vulnerability was not a router kernel vulnerability, but a DNS issue called DNS rebinding. In other words, it's your DNS server that needs fixing for that. When people talk about the risk with "mucking with firmware," they don't mean stock firmware, which is relatively low risk, because the manufacturer will take responsibility if something breaks. Do the upgrade.

comment DHCP: Replacing one IP with another
A lot of DHCP servers will ping an address before assigning it. Hopefully his is one of them.
