What "//x86/" folder are you referring to? I have no idea what you mean by this. Also, there is no Computer shortcut in C:\Users\MyUsername\Desktop". I think the Computer icon is a special icon that doesn't refer to a shortcut on disk. (e.g. that's why there's no 'shortcut' arrow on the icon like there is on shortcuts)

I never use it as another user, so I wouldn't know (it doesn't happen immedaitely, so it would take me forever to figure that out). I have 1 mapped network drive. I am not running any tweaker programs.

I'm going to accept this answer - I just wiped the machine and reinstalled the O/S, and the problem started happening again. So, I reconnected everything, so hopefully the problem is now fixed for good.

@bk1e - thanks for some reason, I was thinking that the event log would only have events listed that occurred since I started the computer - I found an event in the log - I have updated the question accordingly.

I'll give that a try.

It's a desktop. I built it myself, and most of the pieces (including the DVD drive) are less than a year old. I'll double check all of the connections at some point soon.
