comment Why do SSDs have weird sizes?
What is really weird is that non-SSD drives have been non-standard sizes since forever. What is advertised as an 80GB drive might vary from exactly 80GB by many megabytes. Anyone who runs RAID arrays knows this.

comment Why do SSDs have weird sizes?
Except that some SSDs now use TLC (tri-level) states and actually need MORE reserved space than previous drives because of the higher error rates. The Magician software for my Samsung EVO drive recommended reserving more space when I did the setup. So instead of a terabyte its only 920 GB.

comment Historical: why is the first GUI terminal in linux Ctrl-Alt-F7?
GUI was added later. Init system sets up the terminals first so they get 1-6. Then X starts up on 7.

comment Windows 8.1 comes with SQL Server and Visual C++?
MS SQL Compact is a little bit like SQLite. Or maybe a better comparison is the old JET database engine.

comment What is the danger of inserting and browsing an untrusted USB drive?
Yes they do. Almost all of them have small resettable fuses. I found this electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/66507/… to be kind of interesting.

@sylvainulg: I meant about the filesystem types. While Windows only mounts three or four FS types, Linux will try whatever it has available, which can be a lot of filesystems.

comment OCZ SSD drive reviews are very polarized, whereas Corsair and Sandisk reviews are mostly great - What's up with OCZ?
I don't believe the OCZ reviews are all fake. For example, I have used three OCZ drives and I have liked all of them. My current Vertex is running great.

comment Can my Windows 8 computer turn on by itself?
If the operating system wanted to, it could set a timer for every 15 minutes, wake up just a little bit to check on things like reading email for example and then sleep again. Just like a cell phone does.

Windows can set those BIOS timers you mention. It is used for scheduled tasks.

comment Tired of waiting for www.google-analytics.com — can a browser setting “opt me out”?
0.0.0.0 is a valid IP address. At least, software had better NOT be special casing it. The default route is 0.0.0.0/0. Very different from 0.0.0.0/32.
