Have you checked the settings in the hardware BIOS/UEFI? It seems as if your SSD could be set up as the primary hard disk.

comment Can I install Win7 (32-bit) on a 64-bit computer?
my next question is: if Win7(x86) installs properly, will all x86 software I install also work?

comment Windows 7 optimization technique
It would be better if the users view the videos with web browser, versus downloading them, unless they need to edit the videos. If downloading videos is required then upgrade the internet bandwidth to at least 90mb's/sec, or move then with flash drives from one machine to another.

comment How can I disable checking the NTFS file system when booting the system?
BTW, if any of the partitions has problems, Windows will trap this exception and execute CHKNTFS to attempt to repair them. My laptop now gets to the login screen within 9 seconds from the time I power it up. You can manually run CHKNTFS whenever you choose to do so.

That works fine for NTFS un-hidden partitions with logical drive designations, however virtually all laptop's like mine have a hidden OEM partition, (PQSERVICE for Acer's), which is used for Recovery and CHKNTFS doesn't support these with the /X option. So, I had to tweak a registry value to work around this limitation (See my answer below).

OK, so the data is gone.. I'm asking whether I can re-establish the recovery mechanism by adding logical name PQSERVICE to that partition.

@Dave Rook: It's already set to delayed as default.

@RandolphWest: It does, however, if possible, I'd rather disable the auto scan and run it manually.

comment Is it possible to remove the fade effect between login?
The executable that controls fade and other display settings is in C:\Windows\System32\SystemPropertiesPerformance.exe You might also want to take a look at login.exe and USER32.exe in the same folder. If you want to learn how to use reshack, I suggest you download it and read the docs.

I have seen others successfully modify String Tables and other resources in 32/64bit Windows executables and dll files. It allows you to view and modify them as decompiled resource scripts, so all the OP has to do is locate the settings file which controls fading and disable it.

comment Why does Windows 7 use the page file when there's free physical RAM?
That's because Windows detects how much total memory the system has and by default assigns xGB for pagefile.sys and xGB for disk caching, but you can fine-tune these and have more free memory if desired. I have a Vista-SP2 laptop with 2GB memory. Its free memory averages 1GB and my disk light rarely blinks.

What a lot of people don't understand is that windows never really has free memory... I don't agree with your statement. If that were the case, Windows would be constantly swapping. Windows does use some memory for disk caching, but on a box with 8GB of memory, you're going to have lots of free memory.

comment Does compressing all files on a 50% full disk partition slow down performance?
Somewhat related, but that question does not address at which point of % full should disk compression be performed, nor does it address which files should or should not be compressed.

FYI: reshack works even on Win7 and is a whole lot easier to use than that SplashKiller piece-of-junk!

You only mentioned "It's working for Office XP and 2003" but did not mention on which versions of Windows this product works on, plus the website doesn't mention which Windows SplashKiller works on.

comment How can I locate where this splash screen is stored on my computer?
Suppressing the splash screen wouldn't make it totally anonymous because the credentials remain the same, there are other references of it displayed elsewhere and this product is free. Microsoft has bigger worries like bootleg copies of Windows, Office, etc.

I looked at vpc.exe with the HxD hex editor, but could not find any file paths for any images in the exe. If this image is embedded within vpc.exe, what would its header info look like in hex format?
