comment What kind of switchable graphics technology does ATI/AMD have?
"Earlier models of HP notebook PCs supported Fixed Mode while later models support Dynamic Mode." (citation from link in last post) -- does this mean that there exist machines which only support Fixed mode? According to h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Display-and-Video/…, there is support for both settings (although only one can be active at the moment which makes sense), but it's still unclear whether it applies to older (fixed) machines as well.

So, AMD Dynamic Switchable (PowerXPress?) is like NVIDIA Optimus. Do you happen to know whether "Fixed mode" systems can be controlled manually? I found h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/… mentioning "Fixed" and "Dynamic"

This does not prevent Firefox upgrades from fiddling with this setting.

Uninstalling the old Firefox won't touch the Firefox profile which contains bookmarks, cookies and such.

Looks like you're running Ubuntu Lucid. Could you add the output of apt-cache policy g++ build-essential?

comment Is my SSD hard disk broken?
FYI, "SSD" is an abbreviation of "Solid State Disk", so "SSD disk" or even "SSD hard disk" do not make sense.

comment Control device labels in /dev
@churnd You can modify fstab to use UUID or labels, UUID=[uuid] and LABEL=[label] respectively. The UUID can be detected with blkid (run it as root). The label can be found with ls -l /dev/disk/by-label/

comment Ubuntu machine users logging into the same ssh session?
Ah well, byobu is provided with Ubuntu for managing screen profiles easier. I'm happy with mine, so I've no need for other profiles ^^

@b3n In that case, check ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

comment Ubuntu machine users logging into the same ssh session?
At first I've added multiuser on to ~/.screenrc but without it, it seems to work as well. If I type in one session, the other sees it too.

comment How to restore accidentlly deleted `/var` folder in Ubuntu installation?
@Lohoris: well, that's technically possible since /var/log could be a separate mount point. Updated answer with for a more likely situation.

What rm version are you using (rm --version)? rm - works fine with GNU coreutils 8.5.

comment Installing Ubuntu on a dynamic disk
Wubi still uses a file on the windows partition. It's recommended to create a dedicated partition for Ubuntu.

comment Concatenating files from multiple subdirectories
find in the current directory (.) all files with type file and execute cat [current filename]. cat send the file contents to the standard output which is redirected to ../results.txt. Finally, \; closes the -exec option. It would be more logical if > ../results.txt would be placed behind \;, the shell does the redirection to the ../results.txt file, not find. You can confirm that by running set -x before in a bash shell (it might work for your shell too)

Could you add the error log from C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\logs\error.log? Have you restarted Apache after enabling PHP?

That's the same thing as localStorage: sqlite3 webappstore.sqlite, query select * from webappsstore2 where scope='emoh.:moz-safe-about' and key='search-engine';. Changing the home page is a possibility, but I prefer this one.
