comment I have downloaded a Firefox 5 tar.gz package under linux. How can I install it properly?
@Kit Ho: /usr/lib/firefox/plugins should be used by the package manager. /opt is for local packages which can be used across upgrades.

@omtinez: could you post the name of the file and program and the language (e.g. English) of it? I used xxd -r file > testfile to reconstruct the file from the hexdump (and verified the dump with xxd testfile), but unfortunately file testfile still says "data". Not really useful.

I edited your post to make it more correct (hopefully you like it), your original post did not include that at all: superuser.com/revisions/303995/1

less does not start continue in the beginning after it reaches the bottom. To move up, either press Home or P.

comment Ubuntu: default access mode (permissions) for users home dir (/home/user)
AFAIK it's a standard thing of useradd, if it would be Ubuntu-specific, it should have been mentioned in the manual page. A redhat manual page: linux.die.net/man/8/useradd

comment Ubuntu: default access mode (permissions) for users home dir (/home/user)
Your second part is incorrect, the home directory is owned by yourself, so you won't need superuser right for that.

I do think that compression is something for the filesystem, not the encryption itself? Do you've a source for your second guess? It sounds a little weird.

dump2efs is used for ext* filesystems. Try something like sudo mount -t xfs /dev/sda6 /mnt.

Could you add the output of sudo file -s /dev/sda6 to your question?

comment What is the best way to deal with `rm`?
If you want to get a confirmation before deleting, alias rm='rm -i. Keep in mind that FAT32 does not support symbolic links.

If you've such specific Ubuntu questions, you'd better ask those on askubuntu.com

I don't know if that's possible. I've asked it on Askubuntu: How to show just a progress bar during a preseeded installation?

comment Terminal printing carriage return as ^M?? [linux telling me to stop coding?]
Are you sure that an "Enter" in your VM inserts a CRLF? You can test it with: cat > testcrlf && hexdump testcrlf. When this line is executed in the terminal, press Enter followed by Ctrl + D. You should see just 0a in the right column, not 0a0d.

6 is just an indicator of activity, like Ignacio said, 2 and 4 makes the solid state storage.

comment Is it possible to store a password on USB flash drive and use USB flash drive to input password?
Remember that a password does not protect your computer from unauthorized access, anyone could insert a Live CD and remove this password and copy files. The best solution is a full disk-encrypted system using LUKS
