comment How to set default permissions for new folders on mounted samba volume?
@Eedoh: The person responsible for setting up the samba server has specified in the samba configuration file which permissions all new files and/or directories should have (in smb.conf: "create mask = xxx" and "directory mask = xxx"). When you (on the client) request to create a directory, it is the samba daemon on the server that actually does the creation, and it will use the permissions specified in smb.conf (on the server) regardless of what you configure on the client side. So I believe your best bet is to ask the sysadmin to change the server configuration.

comment Display New Mail Desktop Alert not working on Outlook 2007
I can neither confirm nor deny that SP2 would do something like this, but I believe a lot more people would have experienced the same problem if that were the case. Usually such incidents occur if you've been using a secondary monitor, and the application remembers the last window position even after you unplug the secondary monitor. If you've never used a secondary monitor, I have no clue as to why this happened :)

comment Protecting PDF's
And if it is print protected, you could just open it in a reader that does not care about protection (i.e. evince on linux) and do whatever you want with it. Acrobat protection is only as good as the application used to read the document.

comment How to solve “disk does not contain a Windows XP-compatible partition” during installation?
It's not just your opinion :) In my experience, Windows simply won't install if there exists an LVM partition on the disk (the installer freezes). And since many (most?) Linuxes these days defaults to LVM partitioning, this can be a serious show stopper.
