comment How do I copy files into `/var/www` with WinSCP?
slight correction for exactness - sudo chmod 777 /var/www - sudo usermod -G www-data (username) - sudo chmod 770 /var/www - It may work depending on who you are in your example, but 'sudo' should work no matter who you are (assuming your login is in /etc/sudoers for root/admin of course).

comment Can I set the umask on a specific directory?
serverfault.com/questions/6607/… Seems you will have to use 'chmod' if setfacl unavailable under bash.

comment How can I format a laptop that detects no media?
@danixd - Yeah - Did you try the disk on another machine to rule out bad DVD disk? If the disk isn't bad, then you (probably) have a malfunctioning drive. The only other option (aside from replacing drive) would be to boot off USB "drive". You have to enable this in BIOS. Is there any option under the BIOS to use USB boot devices/etc? (Try "drive boot order" and things like that) Some BIOS's let you hit ESC key and pick boot device.

Haven't had to try that in long, long time. Better safe than sorry (!) Good to know. Thanks.

Just a heads up: ACL's don't translate across a network. (Samba/NFS)... You will need to add to that to the individual network config file insead for the specific dir. (i.e. smb.conf - create mask = 775)
